A new study suggests that taking Viagra may be linked to a higher risk of heart problems and stroke in women, researchers in the journalCirculation.
Although Viagra, a prescription drug, has been known to cause a slight drop in blood pressure in men, there is evidence that some men taking it may also experience symptoms of high blood pressure. This is because the drug causes the brain cells in the brain to release hormones that are believed to increase blood pressure.
The study was presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions in New Orleans, and was published online today in theJournal of the American Medical AssociationThe researchers looked at records of more than 20,000 men, ages 40 to 69, who had used the drug for at least one year and were taking it at doses of 100, 100, or more milligrams of Viagra. Viagra was not taken in those who were younger than 40 and had a history of cardiovascular disease.
They analyzed records of those who had taken Viagra at doses of 100, 100, or more milligrams, and found no difference in the risk of any of the above-mentioned heart conditions between those who took the drug and those who had not. However, there were more heart-related conditions than either condition alone.
Researchers also found that men taking Viagra had a significantly higher risk of having a heart attack or stroke than those taking no medication.
"These findings suggest that the risk of heart disease or stroke in men taking Viagra may be greater than in women, although the exact underlying cause is unknown," says Dr. David H. Lee, of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. "This may be due to the fact that the drug can increase blood flow, which in turn may increase the risk of heart problems and stroke."
The researchers used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which was conducted in 2006-2007, to look at men taking Viagra, as well as those who were not. A total of 5,099 men were identified as having health problems in the last 3 years, including hypertension, hyperlipidemia, hypercholesterolemia, and diabetes.
They found that those who were taking Viagra had a higher risk of having a heart attack or stroke than those who were not taking the drug.
The researchers also found that Viagra was not associated with an increased risk of having a stroke, although Viagra was. That is, there was no statistical significance in having a heart attack or stroke in the men who took Viagra.
"The study has important implications because the risk of stroke and heart disease in men taking Viagra may be greater than in women," Lee says. "The higher risk of stroke in men taking Viagra may be due to the fact that the drug can increase blood flow to the heart, which in turn may increase the risk of heart problems and stroke."
The study is the first to look at men taking Viagra. Researchers hope to publish the results in November 2017, and in the meantime, it is unclear whether it will be enough to keep the public health department healthy. The new findings may help increase the use of Viagra in men.
